Frame.io alternative for freelance editors and small studios
Two products, two different problems
Frame.io is a production collaboration platform. Its centre of gravity is the team: shared projects, internal rounds, Camera to Cloud from set, panels inside Premiere Pro and After Effects. It is sold the way team software is sold, per person on the paid plans, because that is who it is for.
FileSaurus is a client delivery portal. Its centre of gravity is the handoff. One branded link that a client opens without an account, comments on frame by frame, approves, pays, and downloads the finals from. It is priced per studio rather than per reviewer, and the client side of it is free however many clients you have.
The useful question is not which has more features. It is where your work gets stuck. If the jam is between you and your team, Frame.io is the right shape and you should keep it. If the jam is between you and a client, chasing notes across four channels and then chasing the invoice for three weeks after delivery, you are paying team-tool prices for a handoff problem.
Side by side
Structural differences only. Both products change their plans, and a table quoting last quarter’s seat price is worse than no table at all.
| Frame.io | FileSaurus | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Production teams — internal review, shared projects, post workflows at team scale. | The client handoff — one editor or a small studio delivering finished work to the people who commission it. |
| How it is priced | Per user on the paid plans, plus storage. Growth means more seats. | One flat subscription per studio. Client reviewers are unlimited and never a seat. |
| Getting paid | Not what it does. You invoice somewhere else and chase it somewhere else. | The invoice lives on the delivery. Payment can gate the download, or the preview. |
| Where the money goes | — | Straight to your own Stripe account as a direct charge. We take no cut of client work. |
| Client sign-in | Review links can be opened without an account; the platform is still an account-shaped place your client is visiting. | No account, ever. A link, optionally a password, and the client is in. |
| Whose name is on it | Frame.io, with your team inside it. | Yours on Pro: logo, colours and your own subdomain, like yourstudio.filesaurus.com. |
| Camera to Cloud, NLE panels | Yes, and genuinely excellent. Deep Adobe integration. | No. Upload from the browser after the export. |
| Frame-accurate comments | Yes, with drawing and version stacks. | Yes, with a drawing canvas and version history. |

What Frame.io does that we do not
These are real reasons to stay, and you would find them out in week one anyway.
Camera to Cloud has no equivalent here. Footage going from the camera to the cloud during the shoot is a genuinely different workflow, and so are the review panels inside Premiere Pro and After Effects. If your day happens inside Adobe apps and you review without leaving them, that is not something we replace.
Neither is team-scale project management. Many editors on one project, internal rounds before the client sees anything, task assignment, the production tooling around it: that is what a platform sold per seat is buying you. FileSaurus has one account per studio and a client on the other side of a link. It is a smaller shape on purpose.
And Frame.io connects to the rest of a large post pipeline. We connect to Stripe, and to your client’s inbox.
What you get instead
The invoice stops being a separate errand. You set a price on the project, the client sees it on the same page as the cut, and they pay by card without leaving it. No invoice email sent separately, no “did you get my invoice” a fortnight later.
If you want it, the paywall actually holds the work: payment can be required before the download or before the preview plays at all, unpaid previews carry a watermark, and the lock releases itself the moment the payment clears. The money is yours on arrival, too. Payments are direct charges on your own Stripe account and settle on your own payout schedule. We are not in the middle of them and we take no percentage of them, which is set out in full on the pricing page.
The smaller thing that changes the most days: your client never signs up for anything. That single obstacle is the usual reason notes come back as a numbered list in an email instead of attached to the frame they refer to.
On limits, Pro takes 8 GB per video and 100 GB for files that are not encoded, inside 500 GB of active storage with no monthly upload cap. The free plan handles 2 GB per video within 5 GB, which covers a normal review round.
Moving a project across
There is no import tool, and for one project you do not need one. Export the cut you are currently reviewing, create a project, drag the file in. It transcodes for streaming while you carry on. Before you send it, price the project if you are gating delivery on payment, decide whether the paywall sits in front of the download or the preview, and set a password or an expiry date if the material is sensitive. Then send one link.
Leave the rounds already in flight where they started. Switching tools mid-round costs your client the one thing they were not complaining about.
Common questions
Do my clients need an account to review?
No. A client opens your link, watches, and clicks the timeline to leave a comment on the exact frame. There is no sign-up, no password to set, and no seat to pay for. You can put a password on the portal, set an expiry date and turn downloads off per project, but none of that requires the client to register.
Does FileSaurus take a cut of what my client pays?
No. Client invoices are direct charges on your own Stripe account, so the payment never passes through us and there is no platform fee on it. Stripe deducts its own processing fee at your account rate, exactly as it would if you had billed the client yourself. We charge for the subscription only.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. Starter is free and includes 5 GB of active storage, up to 2 active projects, frame-accurate review, client invoicing and password-protected portals. Pro raises storage to 500 GB, removes the project and upload-volume limits and adds your own branding and subdomain.
Can I use it alongside Frame.io rather than instead of it?
Plenty of people do. Keep Frame.io for internal rounds with your team and Camera to Cloud on set, and send the client-facing round through FileSaurus. Nothing here assumes it is the only tool in your pipeline.
